When to go
Because Japan is so mountainous and long, there are significant climactic differences between the north and south. Most of the country is in the northern temperate zone, while the southern islands have a subtropical climate. The most comfortable times of year to visit are in spring (between March and May), when the cherry blossoms are in bloom, and autumn (between September and November) when the foliage is coloured glorious golds and scarlets. For skiing, winter runs from December to February and is fairly cold almost everywhere. Summer, from June to August, is hot and humid throughout most of the country and usually begins with a four week rainy season.
