When to go
Auckland

Auckland enjoys warmer and more consistent temperatures all year round compared to destinations in the south. The summer months from December to February are the most popular, especially over the Christmas period. To experience Auckland’s beaches and water activities this is the best time to visit, but for some visitors the summer can be uncomfortably hot and humid. June to September is the wettest period, as well as bringing colder temperatures that can make some activities off-limits, while the spring and autumn are dry and less crowded by comparison. If you're hoping to see a little culture during your visit, the biggest festivals in Auckland take place in the warmer months, including the Anniversary Regatta in late January and the Pasifika Festival of Pacific culture in mid-March.

What to pack
Auckland

Whether you're visiting in summer or winter, the weather in Auckland is unreliable, so it's wise to pack for every possibility. If you're planning to head to the highlands, warm and waterproof clothing will be necessary at any time of year, but summer clothing and swimwear will also be essential for the beach and water sports. Before you board your flight, you should check that your bags are free from food and other organic materials restricted by New Zealand law. Here are a few things you should pack:

  • Passport
  • Power adaptor
  • All-weather jacket
  • Warm layers
  • Comfortable walking boots
  • Hat, sunglasses and sun cream
  • Insect repellent
