Stopover in Singapore
The ‘Lion City’ may boast a skyline of high-rises, flashy hotels and huge corporations, but there’s so much to this island-state beneath its futuristic façade. Discover its culture, nature and delicious cuisine with a short break en route to Australia – here we look at the best things to do with your stopover in Singapore:
Relax in Gardens by the Bay
Midway between London and the Land Down Under, Singapore is the perfect stopping off point. So break up that 24-hour flight by stretching your legs with a stroll around the city, in particular Gardens by the Bay. Nothing is more relaxing and rejuvenating than feeling the peacefulness of the Flower Dome and the Cloud Forest wash over you – immerse yourself in the blossoms of spring and a realm of mountains and waterfalls. And, as the sun sets, walk the scenic OCBC Skyway to really feel at one with nature and the magnificent beauty of the Supertree Grove.
Sip a Singapore Sling
A true rite of passage, head for the two-storey bar at the Raffles hotel to sample an authentic Singapore Sling in its birthplace. Learn about bartender Ngiam Tong Boon and how he thought up the tasty recipe in 1915. But, crucially, tantalise your taste buds with the mix of pineapple, Cointreau, cherry liqueur, gin, bitters and Benedictine.
Explore the temples
With a third of the population practising Buddhism, there is an abundance of temples in Singapore. For sheer serenity and splendour, head for the Tang dynasty-inspired Buddha Tooth Relic Temple in Chinatown. This must-see cultural sight is five storeys high and houses a roof garden, theatre, and a vast collection of Buddhist artefacts.

Discover Joo Chiat/Katong
The Peranakan-influenced neighbourhoods of Joo Chiat and Katong are where Singapore is at its most vibrant. Shopfronts are adorned with bright colours, pretty pre-war shophouses line the streets, and timewarp cafés sit side by side with charming coffee shops and restaurants, whose culinary masterpieces are famous throughout the country. Be sure to try the local dumplings, kueh chang, before wandering the shops in search of Singaporean souvenirs.
Eat chilli crab
Nothing quite beats the first bite of this Singaporean dish. The meat is tender and fresh and, most importantly, the sauce blends sweet and savoury, sugar and spice, to utter perfection. Enjoy this beloved street food with a steamed bum or two – best used to soak up any leftover juices.
Take the family to Universal
Whether you’ve got the whole clan in tow, or are simply a big kid, Universal Studios Singapore on Sentosa Island offers a really fun day out. Movie magic is the order of the day here of course: take the Jurassic Park Rapids Adventure, side with the Autobots onboard Transformers The Ride: The Ultimate 3D Battle, and take the Seasme Street Spaghetti Space Chase. You’ll even get to meet your favourite characters on selected weekends and holidays in the Hollywood Dreams Parade.
