Itinerary

Days 1-2
Hong Kong

Hong Kong

As there's not much time to explore Hong Kong on this itinerary we strongly recommend that you spend a few extra days here. Take a scenic journey around the islands of Hong Kong on the famous passenger ferry service, the Star Ferry. Venture up to the top of Victoria Peak for a bird's eye view. Watch the harbour's spectacular light show - a stunning spectacle of coloured lights, laser beams and searchlights synchronised to music and narration that celebrates the energy, spirit and diversity of Hong Kong. Board the efficient KCR/MTR train to the border between Hong Kong and mainland China. After crossing the border, we catch the Chinese bullet train from Shenzhen to Guangzhou, where where we board our first overnight train journey.

Days 3-4
Yangshuo

Yangshuo

Arriving in Guilin, transfer by private bus to the picturesque town of Yangshuo, which has a great cafe and bar culture. It's also one of the best places in the country to get a feel for local culture and traditions. The countryside around Yangshuo is immortalized in many traditional Chinese paintings - picture immense limestone karsts dotting the rural landscape and towering spectacularly over rice paddies and the meandering Li River. Get a feel for local produce with a visit to the market, then learn to cook some Chinese dishes at the Yangshuo Cooking School. The recipes are easy to make, so you'll be able to recreate them once you get back home. Take an early morning tai chi class with a local master to experience this ancient gentle but powerful martial art and one of China's favourite pastimes.

Days 5-6
Changyang

Changyang

Travel by private bus from Yangshuo to Chengyang, a district consisting of eight villages in the Sanjiang Dong Autonomous County of Guangxi province. This province is made up of many ethnic minorities the most famous being the Dong ethnic minority. The Chengyang Wind and Rain Bridge (also known as the Yongji Bridge or Panlong Bridge) is a major highlight for anyone passing through this region. Built over 100 years ago by the Dong people using no nails or rivets, the structure today is sturdy, picturesque and a great place to explore and overlook the Linxi River flowing below.

Days 7-8
Fenghuang

Fenghuang

With green waters, ancient walls, stilted houses, and lantern-lit streets, Fenghuang (Phoenix Town) is a beautifully preserved ancient town guaranteed to enchant. Travel by private bus to Fenghuang. With green waters, ancient walls, stilted houses, and lantern-lit streets, Fenghuang (Phoenix Town) is a beautifully preserved ancient town guaranteed to enchant. Learn about the customs and culture of Fenghuang's Tujia and Miao minorities. Stroll the atmospheric streets and wander down winding back alleys where stilted wooden houses project over the water on a walking tour of this riverside town, stopping at local diners, silver shops and historical residences. Cross the Tuo Jiang River, the focal point for local people, over ancient bridges and stepping stones.

Days 9-11
Zhangjiajie

Zhangjiajie

Zhangjiajie is an amazing UNESCO-listed National Park covering an area of 11,900 acres. Filled with unique sky rocketing pillars and twisting rivers and streams, rumour has it that these quartz-sandstone pillars inspired the creation of Hallelujah Mountain in the film Avatar. After arriving in Zhangjiajie, your leader will take you on an orientation walk and the rest of the day is free to explore Zhangjiajie city. The following day we will explore the spectacular Zhangjiajie National Park. Trek with a local guide along the twists and turns of Gold Whip Brook as you hike to scenic heights. After lunch, we continue our trek in the Yuanjiajie section of the park and return to our guest house for the night. On the evening of day 11, board your final overnight train in Soft Sleeper 4-birth cabins to Shanghai.

Days 12-14
Shanghai

Shanghai

Board a flight to Shanghai. Blending 21st-century architecture with old-world character, Shanghai is the vibrant pulse of new China. Join your leader for a walking tour of historical Shanghai including the Bund with its spectacular array of art deco style buildings, the narrow winding lanes of the Nongtang or the European-influenced French Concession. The French Concession is the area of Shanghai once designated for the French, consisting of today's Luwan and Xuhui Districts. Luwan's Huaihai Road is a busy shopping street and is also home to both Xintiandi and Tian Zi Fang, extremely popular shopping and dining spots for tourists. The area's tree-lined avenues and their many Tudor mansions still retain an air of the 'Paris of the East'.
