Fly from UK to Brisbane
Explore the vibrant city of Brisbane, a thriving and cosmopolitan metropolis known for its subtropical climate. Wander through world-class galleries, sip on luscious cocktails in the bars and enjoy al-fresco meals in the sunshine by the lazy Brisbane River. While you’re here, you can get up close to Australia’s most popular native animals at the world’s largest koala park, Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, where koala cuddling and kangaroo feeding are the top activities.
Fly to Hervey Bay, then take the boat and discover the rock formations, sand dunes and lakes of Fraser Island, the largest sand island in the world. A long, thin sandbank that stretches 123km, Fraser Island is a World Heritage Site and the only place in the world where rainforests grow on sand dunes. Cruise the sandy highways, cool off in sparkling freshwater lakes and look out for wallabies, dingoes and echidnas on land, and dugong, dolphins and stingray off the coast.
Lady Elliot Island
On your return to Hervey Bay, you’ll fly to Lady Elliot Island, where you can if you can spot a turtle or two. As you fly in, look out for the shadows of the manta rays, sometimes visible in the sea below. Lady Elliot is the southernmost inhabited island of the Great Barrier Reef and named after a ship that once ran aground on its reef. Discover the vibrant corals, tropical fish, shipwrecks and manta rays by snorkel, scuba diving or by glass-bottomed boat, and keep your eyes peeled for sea turtles.
From Lady Elliot Island, you’ll fly to Redcliffe from where you’ll need to take a taxi (not included) to Brisbane for the night. Perhaps take a walk by the river or try out one of the many exciting and eclectic restaurants that the city has to offer.
Fly to the beautiful Whitsundays and explore Hamilton Island, with its azure waters and bright white beaches. Once reserved for romantic honeymooners and laid-back yacht enthusiasts, Hamilton now offers quad biking, go-karting, fishing and world-class golfing, along with more than 12 miles of walking trails. But perhaps best of all is the top-shelf snorkelling in its pristine waters. While you’re here, board your boat for a scenic cruise to Whitehaven Beach, a mesmerising swirl of white sand and bright azure seas, with a stop off at Daydream Island for a spot of sunbathing.
Fly to Cairns, hop on the ferry and 45 minutes later you’ll be among the tropical rainforests and warm waters of Fitzroy Island. Snorkelling and sea kayaking are included here, so grab your paddle and explore the clear blue seas, which are also ideal for swimming. There are no cars on the island, and there are plenty of varied walking tracks through the lush interior. Take a look around the Fitzroy Island Turtle Rehabilitation Centre and learn about the work done to look after sick and injured turtles before they are returned to the wild.
Take the boat back to Cairns and head on to the lush rainforests that surround laid-back Port Douglas. This town is the perfect entry point for exploring the natural wonders of the Daintree Rainforest, and spotting its varied flora and fauna. Spend lazy days kicking back on Four Mile Beach's spectacular stretch of coastline, sprinkled with white sand and lapped by turquoise waters. Take a stroll along the dappled streets, browse the boutique shops and admire the historical architecture, soaking in the relaxed, small-town atmosphere.
Depart Port Douglas and return to the UK
