Tortuguero

Tortuguero

Explore the canals and rainforest of Tortuguero by boat, keeping an eye out for caiman, monkeys, sloths and turtles. Head out after dark to spot the shyer nocturnal animals and learn about the biodiversity of this fascinating national park. Travelling through the forest, you’ll eventually reach secluded beaches where green turtles nest between July and October and loggerhead, hawksbill and leatherback turtles nest from March to June, so keep your eyes peeled. Relax in a hammock, rent a kayak or wizz along a zip line (optional, extra cost).

Days 4-5
La Fortuna

La Fortuna

Visit a coffee cooperative on your way to adrenaline-fuelled La Fortuna where you can admire the surrounding jungles and volcanoes. Join the lovely Doña Mara and her family for a tortilla-making class – grind the corn, make it into dough, shape them and cook them, then eat them! If you wish to scare yourself silly then La Fortuna is the place to do it, with rafting, rappelling down a waterfall, canyoning, paddle boarding, kayaking and caving all on offer.

Days 7-9
Monte Verde

Monte Verde

Grab your raincoat and head into Monte Verde’s misty cloud forest at Santa Elena, past orchids, ferns and jungle vines, and spot the colourful birdlife. You’ll have some free time to explore Monte Verde too – choose from horseback riding, jungle ziplining, butterfly gardens and suspension bridges. You could also visit a coffee plantation, and learn about the process of picking, drying, roasting and finally brewing at a fair trade coffee cooperative. If that’s not enough, Monte Verde also has a cheese factory where you can sample the wares (all optional, extra cost, apart from forest trek).

Days 10-12
Manuel Antonio

Manuel Antonio

Relax on the beautiful beaches of Manuel Antonio and spend the day swimming, snorkelling or hiking, looking out for armadillos. Hop in a boat and head out across the warm seas, passing islands and cliffs in search of humpback whales, spotted dolphins and sea turtles (optional, extra cost). You can try your hand at surfing or boogie boarding, and at low tide look out for the sand bank that’s shaped like a whale’s tail. Take a day trip into Manuel Antonio National Park, exploring the tidal pools and rocky outcrops and lookout points, keeping an eye out for sloths and monkeys.

Day 13
San José

San José

Return to San José and perhaps watch the world go by at the Plaza, where there will usually be a few street performers and some market stalls. San José is Costa Rica’s capital and is found at an altitude of 1200 metres among the mountains. For sightseers there are a number of museums to explore, including the Gold Museum and the Jade Museum, and the central market sells just about anything you could ever think of. Alternatively, you could check out the Teatro Nacional, a lavish building over a century old and with a great little café if you’re feeling peckish.
