Cape Town’s location is unrivalled – a modern, eclectic city surrounded by majestic mountains beside a glittering expanse of ocean. For heady city and ocean views, consider ascending Table Mountain then abseiling your way back down. Alternatively, you can opt for the more sedate cable car. Take your time to discover this wonderful city, from the colourful blooms of Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens to the bustling restaurants and swanky bars of the V&A Waterfront. You’ll spend a day visiting Robben Island, a must-do on any South African itinerary. Here, Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 18 of the 27 years he served, and you will learn all about this UNESCO World Heritage site from a former political prisoner. Step back in time as you tour the leper graveyard, before taking a peek inside Nelson Mandela’s former cell. Back in Cape Town, explore the epic scenery of the Cape Peninsula. Journey along Chapman’s Peak Drive, one of the most spectacular roadways in the world, and stop off at the Cape Point Nature Reserve, where you can spot all sorts of wildlife. Travel along the False Bay coast to Boulders Beach and watch the colony of rare African penguins waddling along the shore; one of Cape Town’s most famous sights.
In the heart of the Cape Winelands, Stellenbosch is one of the most famous wine regions in the world. Wander the leafy streets and admire the handsome Cape Dutch architecture, visit the museums and galleries and be sure to sample the high-end food in the numerous gourmet restaurants. No trip to Stellenbosch would be complete without heading out to a beautiful mountain vineyard to sample fine wines. Eat and drink your way around the charming old town in the morning, before spending an afternoon tasting exquisite white wines and full-bodied reds, while overlooking row upon row of sun-drenched vines.
This pretty coastal town, perched on South Africa’s Western Cape, is renowned for its outstanding whale-watching opportunities. Southern right and humpback whales migrate through these waters between July and November, and you can even spot them from the shore. Spend the day getting up close to South Africa’s incredible wildlife on the Dyer Island cruise. This island is home to African penguins and Cape cormorants, while seals frolic in the nearby surf; an experience not to be missed. Keep your eyes peeled for southern right whales on the journey back to shore; this is one of the best whale-watching destinations in the world after all. After a wildlife-watching adventure, explore the foodie culture Hermanus is also famous for. The Hemel-en-Aarde Valley wine route is a great addition to your itinerary if you’re keen to discover a host of cellar doors and delicious local produce. Sip, sniff and swirl your way through the valley while you soak up the spectacular mountain vistas.
