The best places to visit in the South

Without doubt the USA’s most colourful region, the South encompasses the toe-tapping cowboy ranches of Texas’s Wild West along with the alligator-infested bayous of the Deep South. So hire a car, hit the road and turn up the country music as you enjoy a holiday itinerary tailor made for you by our USA Experts. To start planning, check out our favourite places in the region below.

Country music beats
Music fans and wannabe stars flock to Nashville, a lively celebration of all things country music and home to both the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Grand Ole Opry. We recommend spending a couple of days in town touring the Civil War museums, seeing a live show by your favourite artist and tasting the many cayenne fried chicken shops.

Home of the King
America’s first stop for rock ‘n’ roll fans, Memphis is synonymous with Elvis Presley, who once lived here in his grand Graceland mansion. You’ll need at least two days to explore the city’s live music venues, walk along the Mississippi River and visit a museum or two, most of which cover the origins of Memphis’s music scene or the Civil Rights Movement.
The French Quarter

New Orleans

New Orleans

Mardi Gras town
One of the most historically and culturally rich cities in the USA, New Orleans is awash with European style architecture, Caribbean colours and Creole flavours. This hedonistic mix of cultures comes to a head in the annual Mardi Gras festival, but you can celebrate any time in the cocktail bars and late-night jazz clubs of Bourbon Street in the French Quarter.

Cowboy country
A vast and incredibly diverse region, the Lone Star State is home to the modern, vibrant cities of Houston and San Antonio, the Old West influences of Dallas and the beaches of Corpus Christi. It’s not all cities though; take some time to explore the rugged scenery of Big Bend National Park or experience life as a cowboy on a real working ranch.

“One of the special ways to reach New Orleans is from Memphis onboard the train. It follows the Mississippi rolling past plantations and great old port towns.”
