New Zealand South Island
Get outdoors in the South Island, a land of mountains, dramatic fiords, and no less than ten of New Zealand’s 14 national parks. Adventure enthusiasts can hike the glaciers, while those looking for relaxation will find it among the lakes and vineyards. If you’ve come from the North Island, you’ll arrive into Picton, or if you’ve flown in, Christchurch will be your first port of call. Work your way around in a loop, stopping to admire the peaks of Milford Sound and the coves of Abel Tasman National Park.
New Zealand North Island
Learn more about New Zealand’s history and Maori culture in the North Island, where Wellington’s excellent museums and Rotorua’s Maori heritage await. You’ll find some fantastic beaches, while Lake Taupo is the place for outdoor adventures. To see the best of the island, start in Auckland and work your way south to Wellington, or vice versa. Along the way, pause to admire the bubbling geysers of Rotorua, kayak the rocky arches of the Coromandel Peninsula, and get out on the water of Lake Taupo.
