The best places to visit in the Midwest

The Midwest USA covers a vast and varied region that stretches from the peaks of the Rocky Mountains to the vibrant cities of St Louis and Chicago. With plenty of national parks and scenic farmlands to explore in between, on a Midwestern holiday it’s best to focus on one or two states, or perhaps see it all in style with a long distance road trip along Route 66. Here are some of our favourite places to visit.

Yellowstone National Park

Geological wonderland
A wild geological landscape, Yellowstone was founded in 1872, making it the oldest national park in the USA. Set atop an enormous supervolcano dotted with bright blue hot springs and erupting geysers, plus various canyons, mountains and rivers, the park has been home to Native Americans for 11,000 years. Get back to nature and explore by car, by boat or on foot and look out for bison, elk and grizzly bears.

Route 66

Route 66

Epic road trip

Route 66, the 2,451-mile route between Chicago and Los Angeles, is one of the world’s most iconic road trips. Crossing eight states and three time zones, the highway passes through wild, cactus-filled landscapes, dusty, middle-of-nowhere towns, rugged mountains and cities more than a little reminiscent of the Old West. You’ll need at least two weeks to do it justice, longer if you want to explore Chicago and LA too.

More about Route 66

The Windy City
Perhaps best known for its deliciously cheesy deep pan pizza, Chicago is stuffed full of museums, art galleries, performance venues and wide green spaces. For a good overview, ascend to the 94th floor of the John Hancock Building where you’ll be treated to panoramic views over the city and Lake Michigan beyond. Chicago is sport obsessed, so catch a game of football, baseball or basketball while you’re in town.
Mackinac Island

Great Lakes

Great Lakes

Forests and fresh water fun

The largest group of freshwater lakes in the world, the five Great Lakes straddle the border between the USA and Canada. On the US side, start in Chicago and tour the peaceful lakeside towns along the shores of Lake Michigan then kayak to the icy caves of the Apostle Islands on Lake Superior and step back in time among the Victorian architecture of Mackinac Island on Lake Huron. Don’t miss: Lake Michigan Apostle Islands Mackinac Island.

The Midwest has an incredible range of national parks best explored by campervan. I was surprised at just how easy it was to drive a campervan in the States, especially around the parks.
