Places to visit in Laos

Although under the radar for much of the 20th century, Laos’ relaxed pace of life and rural countryside vistas have brought it out onto the main Southeast Asia stage in recent years. It might not bask in the limelight like nearby Thailand, but its bucolic way of life, friendly people and dramatic karst scenery are attracting more and more visitors. With temples to rival Bangkok and Hanoi and a range of outdoor adventures on offer too, Laos is no longer the afterthought tacked on to a Thailand holiday, but stepping proudly out of the shadows as a destination in its own right.

Below we've listed highlights not to miss on a holiday to Laos. To plan your visit, talk to one of our Asia Experts today on 0800 707 6010.

Wat Xieng Thong, Luang Prabang Wat Xieng Thong, Luang Prabang

Luang Prabang

Luang Prabang

World Heritage city

At the meeting point between the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers, Luang Prabang is a gentle town of aging monasteries, gilded temples and orange-robed monks, set against a backdrop of forested hills. Stand-out sights include the opulent Wat Xieng Thong and its adjacent gardens, and the former Royal Palace, now a museum.

But the best way to appreciate Luang Prabang is simply to wander the cobbled streets, soak in the atmosphere and sample the delicious French-fusion food. Or, if you can bear to be up early, join the monks at a traditional alms ceremony.

Buddha Park, Vientiane Buddha Park, Vientiane

Vientiane

Vientiane

French colonial capital

Chilled-out Vientiane is far removed from the freneticism of other Southeast Asian capitals. Here, peace and quiet prevail, along with a smattering of museums and monuments. There are some lovely bakeries too, a throwback to the French colonial days.

As the Lao capital, Vientiane is the most frequent entry point into the country. Spend at least a day exploring, and longer if you want to take a day trip to Nam Ngum Lake or the nearby fishing villages. For something a little different, try Buddha Park, where the quirky statues include Hindu gods and a giant pumpkin.

Vang Vieng in Laos Vang Vieng

Vang Vieng

Vang Vieng

On the banks of the Nam Song

Peaceful Vang Vieng is scenery central, with dramatic karst peaks jutting skywards from the forests, and the tranquil Nam Song River flowing past traditional villages. Aside from landscape watching, this is the place to try all manner of outdoor adventures: choose from kayaking, hiking, climbing, swimming and cycling.

About three hours north of Vientiane, Vang Vieng is easily accessible from the capital and makes an obvious stop on the way to Luang Prabang, three hours further on. To take in the sights, you’ll need at least a day or two, but linger longer for extended hikes or visits to nearby caves.

Si Phan Don on the Southern Mekong Si Phan Don

The Southern Mekong

The Southern Mekong

Lifeblood of Laos

The Mekong River flows into Laos from China, passing through Luang Prabang and Vientiane before following the Thai-Lao border to the far south. Just over the border from Cambodia, it is the section in Champasak that holds the most interest.

Here, a little off the beaten track, the impressive Wat Phu is nestled among the forests, the farms of the Bolaven Plateau offer an insight into rural life and the 4,000 riverine islands of Si Phan Don provide kayaking and cycling opportunities by the Mekong’s sandbars and waterfalls.
