Santiago de Chile

Lively capital

Usually known by its shorter name Santiago, Chile’s capital is a bustling metropolis, pulsing with energy, filled with culture and within easy access of both the Andes Mountains and the Pacific coast. A good city to explore on foot, Santiago is made up of a number of neighbourhoods, each with their own characters and styles. Try Bellavista for the street art by day and the funky bars and restaurants by night, and don’t miss the views from the top of Cerro San Cristóbal.

Valparaiso

Valparaiso

Valparaiso

Bohemian seaside city

An hour and a half’s drive west from Santiago, Valparaiso is a hilly seaside town with a funky bohemian vibe. Filled with brightly painted houses, Valpo, as the locals call it, might be a little dilapidated, but that’s all part of the charm. Come to ride the funicular railways to the top of the hills, take in the sweeping Pacific Ocean views, and admire the imaginative street art. Valparasio may be doable on a day trip from the capital, but we recommend you linger longer to soak up all the colour.

Rapa Nui

Easter Island, otherwise known as Rapa Nui, is a bit of an enigma, and has fascinated travellers ever since its mysterious stone statues, known as moai, were first observed centuries ago. Just how did the 887 figurines, all between 900 and 335 years old and some weighing over 80 tons, get here, and what is their purpose? Uncover the mystery for yourself on a visit to this fascinating World Heritage Site. But it’s not all about the moai - there are two gorgeous white sand beaches to chill out on, one of which is surfable.

San Pedro de Atacama

San Pedro de Atacama

Landscapes from another world

A gateway to the natural and geological delights of the Atacama Desert, San Pedro de Atacama is a dusty frontier town with numerous accommodation choices for its many visitors. Although the town interesting enough, with a number of restaurants and a couple of museums, the real attractions lie out in the desert. Here, the Tatio Geysers spurt steam into the cold morning air, the moonlike Valle de la Luna offers viewpoints aplenty, and dusky pink Andean flamingos roam the salt pans.

Torres del Paine National Park

Patagonia’s premier park

In the far south of Patagonia, a vast land of ice and mountains that Chile shares with Argentina, lies the Torres del Paine National park, one of the world's foremost hiking destinations. Among the endlessly dramatic scenery of fjords, forests and glaciers, the park’s most recognisable features are the towering granite pillars of the torres, or towers themselves, overlooking an impossibly blue lake high in the mountains. To see them, you’ll have to hike, either as day hike from your hotel or as part of the five-day W Circuit, which also takes in the Grey Glacier.
