When to go to Auckland

Auckland by seasons

Auckland is lucky; its climate is generally warm with no extreme temperatures. It does rain though, especially in winter, so it’s a good idea to come prepared with a waterproof and an umbrella, whichever month you visit. But with over 2,060 hours of sunshine every year, the chances of sunny days and blue skies is high – meaning any time of year is a good time to visit.

Spring in Auckland
Spring

September to November

Tying with autumn as the best time to visit Auckland, spring in the city is delightful. Hovering around the high teens, temperatures are mild, rainfall is low and the summer rush hasn’t yet started. Spring brings new life too, with blossoming trees and blooming flowers, best appreciated in the city’s Botanic Gardens.

Go for…

Diwali Festival of Lights: one of Auckland’s most popular annual festivals, held in October, Diwali celebrations in the city include Indian food, traditional dances and costumes, plenty of fireworks and a Bollywood dance-off.

Auckland On Water Boat Show: for a city obsessed with boats, its unsurprising that they celebrate them in this annual event, held at the end of September in Viaduct Harbour.

Summer in Auckland
Summer

December to February

Summer is Auckland’s peak travel season, and it’s no wonder. Days are hot and sunny, with temperatures reaching the mid-twenties and very little wind, ideal for getting outdoors and trying some hiking, kayaking or cycling. Perhaps climb one of the city’s 48 volcanic cones? Better yet, get yourself down to the beach and chill out on the sands.

Go for…

New Year’s Eve: watch the fireworks launch from Auckland’s Sky Tower as we say goodbye to the old year and hello to the new in true Kiwi style. It’s one heck of a party!

Christmas Lights at MOTAT: meet Santa and his elves at this celebration of light and Christmas, held at Auckland’s Museum of Transport and Technology, which is covered in fairy lights for the occasion.

March to May

As the summer comes to a close, the pleasant days of autumn arrive. Temperatures decrease back into the high teens, and the chances of rain increases slightly. This is the perfect time for a walk in one of the city’s parks, or to catch the ferry across to the vineyards and gourmet restaurants of Waiheke Island to see the autumn foliage on the trees.

Go for…

Royal Easter Show: with something for everyone, this fun-filled extravaganza features fairground rides, farmyard animals, musical concerts, the Zika Circus and the New Zealand Strongman competition.

Winter

June to August

Winter might be the coolest time of year to visit Auckland, but temperatures still rarely drop below 8°C. Rainfall is most likely at this time, but it’s still a perfectly acceptable time to visit, as long as you bring a jacket. It’s a good time to have a go at surfing, visit the city’s museums and art galleries and to indulge at one of the many seafood restaurants.

Go for…

New Zealand International Film Festival (NZIFF): running since 1969, this celebration of the Big Screen brings various local and international movies to Auckland, shown at the Civic Theatre.

New Zealand Boutique Wine Festival: if you like wine, get down to Auckland’s Imperial Building in mid-June for a showcase of New Zealand’s best wines, all served up with matching gourmet food.
