Getting there and around

Wellington International Airport is only a 10 minute drive from the city centre. It is a busy airport with regular trans-Tasman flights.

Good public transport system: Getting around the city is easy because it is so compact. There is a public transport system - Metlink, with regular buses, ferries and trains throughout the city and outer regions.

 

Sightseeing Ideas

Seal Coast Safari: A Seal Coast Safari is an adventure of discovery. Drive for 20 kilometres along the beach, over rocks, around the bays and headlands in a 4WD truck.

Cable Car: Wellington's cable car gives access from city up the hill to harbour views, botanical gardens, observatory, cable car museum, restaurant and downhill walks via historic Thorndon back to city and waterfront.

Te Papa: The Museum tells the great stories of NZ's past, present and future. Over twenty galleries house imaginative exhibitions and interactive experiences that explore our unique natural environment, the triumphs and tragedies of colonial history, the warmth and vitality of the Maori.

 

Top tips

Wellington Harbour: It's impossible to come to Wellington and ignore the lure of the water. Wellington Harbour and its reliable winds offer excellent sailing experiences. Another option is to take the ferry to Somes Island, which has long held spiritual significance to Maori.
