Areas of Melbourne
Bourke Street: Bourke Street Mall and tree-lined Collins Street, the ultimate shopping strip and business center.
South Bank: Southbank is the area that stretches along the southern bank of the Yarra River. It starts the moment you cross Princes Bridge, turn left and walk down the steps to the river. Southbank was once an old and neglected area, mostly industrial, which has recently been rejuvenated as the heartbeat of the central city area.
Docklands: For years the Docklands precinct sat on the western edge of the inner city as a wasteland of old docks, piers and disused sheds. It is now being turned into a thriving residential, shopping, entertainment and cafe precinct.
Crown: Crown EC is a gathering of shops, cafes, restaurants, Accommodation courts, cinemas, live shows, music venues and a casino all under one huge roof. Situated in the Southbank precinct, the Crown complex dominates the Yarra River. There are 17 bars, 35 restaurants and cafes and lots of speciality shops located inside the complex.
St Kilda: is a remarkable place. It is situated on one of the most picturesque points of the Bay a short distance from the city and has safe sandy beaches.
Getting there and around
Melbourne Airport is located 15 miles (25km) from Melbourne to the north of the city.
Good public transport system: An efficient public transport system, known as The Met, is an integrated service utilising trams, trains and buses, with standard fares. The best way to see the city and central suburbs is by tram, a fast, cheap and convenient system. Taxis, highly visible in bright yellow, are numerous but expensive.
Sightseeing Ideas
