Areas of Hong Kong

Hong Kong Island: Hong Kong Island is on the southern side of the harbour facing Kowloon. The main business district is Central on Hong Kong Island. East of Central lies the Admiralty commercial district; Wai Chai, known for restaurants and clubs.

Kowloon: Kowloon covers a mere 12 sq km of high-rise buildings extending from the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront to Boundary Street. Unlike on Hong Kong Island, there's no tram to ferry visitors around, but areas of interest are not spaced too far apart.

Lantau: The biggest island in the enclave, Lantau covers nearly twice the area of Hong Kong Island but its population totals about 30,000. It's also the site of Hong Kong's new Chek Lap Kok Airport.

New Territories: Hong Kong's New Territories begin at Boundary Street in north Kowloon. Here the enclave character from mile to mile: industrial complexes alongside farming villages, skyscraper towns blooming in the middle of nowhere.

Getting there and around

Hong Kong International Airport (Chek Lap Kok) is located about 45km (28mi) outside the city. The journey to/from the city centre takes between 45 - 60 minutes.

Good public transport system including: trams, MTR, ferries and taxis.

Sightseeing Ideas

Canton: To come to Hong Kong and miss out on a taste of China would be a shame and Canton just over the border. Definitely worth a day trip (don't forget to check visa information for China).

Aberdeen: Aberdeen is a scenic highlight of any trip around Hong Kong Island. Brightly decorated trawlers, which double as floating homes for Aberdeen's fishermen. Worth a visit is one of the famous floating restaurants.

Disneyland Hong Kong: The magical world of Walt Disney's theme park arrived in Hong Kong in 2005. With unique Chinese elements it will be an experience not to be missed.

Stanley Market: Stanley Market is a delight for shoppers, filled with stalls, shops and innovative restaurants.
