Adventure can be anything outside of the day-to-day. It doesn't have to mean white-water or bungy, but can be about the destination, the activity, the company you're in, the wildlife you see, the cultures you visit. Relaxed or full-on is your choice.

Cycle the Backroads of Sri Lanka

14 days £1,299 from
Although a compact island, Sri Lanka is incredibly diverse. Exploring on two wheels is the best way to see this rural country and to experience the way of life of its friendly people. Beginning our journey in its region of ancient cities, we travel along the old King's Route, created more than 1000 years ago. Here we stop to climb the impressive 'Lion's Rock' fortress at Sigiriya and explore the cave temples at Dambulla. We visit Kandy before riding through the tea estates of Nuwara Eliya in the Central Highlands where the cooler temperatures and lush scenery make for a relaxing ride. In the south we visit Yala National Park where there are leopards, elephants and an abundance of colourful birdlife, before ending the trip on the beaches of Sri Lanka's beautiful south coast. This trip covers a substantial part of the island, taking in as much as possible of the scenic and cultural variety that Sri Lanka has to offer. Most of the route is a continuous ride, and transfers are kept to a minimum.

Highlands of Sri Lanka

15 days £1,299 from
Think Sri Lanka, and trekking is rarely the first thought that springs to mind. But the unusualness of the destination is also half its charm; quiet trails lead up verdant mountainsides, passing beneath the groaning boughs of dense forests. The distinctive call of monkeys and the roaring of waterfalls punctuate the stillness between the remote villages in the hill country, not another walking boot or rucksack in sight. Acclimatisation begins in Sigiriya with a visit to Lion Rock, quintessential to any Sri Lanka adventure. From here the trekking begins in earnest, through the untouched World Heritage conservation area of the Knuckles Mountain Range, past rice paddies and brushing the vibrant, emerald-green tea plantations of Dickoya, with the chance to pause for the perfect cup of tea! After this, the drama of the 1000m drop at World's End will leave you awe-struck, and the summit of sacred Adam's Peak (2243m) offers a challenge. The finale to this fortnight of spectacular scenery is the chance to spot a leopard slipping between the shadows in Yala National Park, before falling into a tranquil trance on the idyllic palm-fringed beaches, washed by the Pacific Ocean.

Original and not done by anyone else this is a pioneering wildlife safari giving the most valuable commodity of all in both parks - time.

Whales And Leopards of Sri Lanka

9 days £1,499 from
Sri Lanka, known for its culture, beaches, highlands and tea, is less well known for its wildlife. This is a tour purely concentrating on whales and the wildlife of Yala National Park, especially leopards. Many people are only just learning of the extraordinary phenomenon of the huge Blue and Sperm whales arriving in numbers just off the south coast. A Blue whale is the size of a couple of London buses but much more streamlined and photogenic. Seen from the sea on a privately chartered boat, it is a marine experience without parallel. This tour divides its time between these exciting navigations and Yala, several hours away, with one of the highest concentrations of leopards in the world as well as plenty of marvellously coloured birdlife. This will be an intense safari but with a bit of downtime as well, and there are few better places for this than Sri Lanka.Click here for related News articles
